Welcome

Welcome to the Longacre SCM wiki. This wiki exists as an adjunct to the main site. The primary purpose is to serve as a repository of CM tool data aimed at reviewing and/or evaluating the tools. The tools are listed (by name, duh) in the tools:byname namespace. The tools there get a page, or more, of their own. The tools are classified in the various children of the tools: hierarchy. Build tools are in tools:build, and so on.

There is a difference between evaluating and reviewing a tool. An evaluation is considerably easier in that regard, since it needs to answer just a single question: can *my company* (or maybe just me) actually use this tool to do what we need to do? A review typically has to spend a bunch of time on features that may or may not be relevant. Sure, your version control tool supports automatic conversion of DOS and Unix line-terminator sequences in text files. But for a {Windows | Linux}-only shop, that's not any kind of feature.

There are separate spaces for evaluations and reviews. Evaluations are in evaluation:* while reviews are in review:*. The layout is <evaluation-or-review>:tool:<tool-name>:<date>. Since we don't care too much about hurt feelings, there's every chance that an eval or review might not make the vendor happy. The :date part allows for follow-on reviews. Guidelines for evaluating (and reviewing) the different types of tools are in the corresponding place in the tree. The build tools will be linked under tool:build. The guide for evaluating build tools will be in evaluation:build and the review guide will be in review:build. If the tool category has sub-specialties, then the evaluation guides may evolve sub-guides.
